Nova Siri Wine
The fertile and sunny fields of Nova Siri( a small village in the province of Matera and at the Calabrian border) have been always occupated by vineyards. Wine tradition has been very strong and still today it is present in the life of these people who have made the wine a medium of communication and exchanges. The hospitable nature of Lucan people is very famous and it is shown above all at table, in front of the typical simple but tasty meals and the wine. For Lucan people inviting peolpe to eat or drink with them is a pleasure and an honour; so refusal was considered an offence above all in the past. Wine an vineyards have many importance for the people of these lands because they belong to their cultural identity. Indeed, Nova Siri and the surrounding lands were the heart of the ancient Oenotria, “the Wine Land”, called in this way by the first Greeks arrived here since the first half of the 7th century b.C.. they came in order to found their first colonies on the ionian coasts, among which there was Siris near the river of the same name (probably the present Sinni). It was clear that the lands staying from the ionian coasts to the hills were good for grapes cultivation. It is for this reason that the wine produced here has a taste of ancient times, although the designation of quality have been acquired only in recent times above all the IGT wines.
